Reinforcing your popup blocker

Most people utilise a popup blocker these days, and if you don't - you really should! A pretty good one comes built into Firefox, as it does Netscape, AOL's browser, and a variety of other standalone applications such as Safari on the Mac. Internet Explorer does not have the facility built in, however add-on toolbars such as Google's offer a 3rd party solution.
However the crafty bastards who sent out all the popups in the first place are finding ways around these blockers. I've been getting more and more popups advertising smilies for my IM's and offers to protect me from spyware and lordy only knows what else. Which is fucking annoying.
However, you can put a further obstacle in their path by modifying something called your "hosts" file. This usually blocks the popup code from reaching your computer, before it can even open the popup window.
More information and instructions can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file.
